Back To Case Studies

Knowle Grange Health Club in Wadhurst wanted to increase its membership numbers to secure its long-term future, building on a previous permission Batcheller Monkhouse had already helped secure for a new gym and refurbished spa. But growing membership meant more cars, and the site’s access and parking needed to keep pace.

Batcheller Monkhouse commissioned a transport assessment, which confirmed the site could support the extra traffic from more members. The team then worked with transport and tree consultants to redesign the site’s access altogether, closing two existing entrances (one with poor visibility) in favour of a single, better-positioned central access point that also freed up more space for parking. To support the case for a higher membership cap, Batcheller Monkhouse researched membership levels at other local health clubs and gyms, and demonstrated that even with the proposed increase, Knowle Grange would remain significantly smaller than town-centre facilities.

The council approved the application under delegated powers, alongside off-site highway improvements to support public transport links to the site. The club has since implemented every part of the scheme, including new changing rooms and a cover for the outdoor pool, and is now operating with fully expanded facilities.
