Batcheller Monkhouse were instructed to submit a revised design for a roof extension to an existing block of flats to create 2 additional flats in North London.

Batcheller Monkhouse were brought in to find a way through. Working closely with the project architect, our planners reviewed the approved scheme and proposed an alternative: rather than a separate vertical extension sitting on top of the existing mansard roof, a simpler continuous upward extension of the roof itself. This reduced the structural complexity significantly. The revised design introduced dormer windows, which became the focus of negotiation with the London Borough of Barnet. After discussion and some adjustment to the size and position of the dormers, the council accepted that this was the design solution that best reflected the character of the surrounding area.

Planning consent for the revised scheme was secured within the standard eight-week target for minor applications, delivering a workable, cost-effective extension where the original approved design would not have been financially viable.
