Can you make an income from your garden shed?

With the trend increasing for quirky holiday retreats have you considered the possibility of converting your outbuildings and entering the hospitality industry?

Garden Shed Conversion

Last year alone recorded over 165,000 holiday lets in the UK with the average house generating £22,281 in holiday let income over the last 12 months. The popularity of the South of England as a holiday destination has led to a 17.5% increase in rental prices in 2017 compared to the previous year. With West Sussex being an ideal bolt-hole and the National Park in particular being in need of more visitor accommodation, now is a great time to be getting involved in the holiday let industry.

With any conversion you may need to seek Planning Permission, particularly if you are considering offering serviced or self-catering accommodation. Consent from your Local Planning Authority must be gained if there is any ‘material’ change of use to a building. However, how much change is allowed before that change materially affects the lawful use of the building is a grey area. It is therefore important to seek professional advice at an early stage.

At Batcheller Monkhouse our highly experienced planners have worked on several planning applications for outbuilding holiday conversions. Our Planning Team is ideally placed to advise you further on your project so please get in touch to see how we can help.
