Meet Leo Hickish FRICS MBIAC Partner – Rural Professional

Leo-HickishLeo Hickish says: “It was perhaps inevitable that, as the son of a Land Agent in Cornwall, I would identify rural surveying as the perfect career.  Graduating from the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester in the mid ‘80s my first job was as assistant agent at Cowdray Park in West Sussex.  This was the perfect environment to learn the core skills that any land agent needs, whilst also being fortunate to develop my polo and shooting skills.

The opportunity to open a new office for national firm in Hertfordshire drew me away from Sussex. This was of course a very different environment but it taught me how to balance the rural economy with the pressures of a hectic environment and the constraints of the Green Belt.

Looking to implement what I had learnt in both environments with the challenge of starting a new private enterprise I joined forces with Tom Bodley Scott to create the professional department at Batcheller Thacker in 2002 at their Tunbridge Wells premises.

It has been my great pleasure to help lead the professional department of Batcheller Thacker and now following the merger with Monkhouse and Bannisters, Batcheller Monkhouse has become one of the largest private surveying, planning and estate agency firms in the South East.
Much of my time is spent in strategic estate and tax planning and wider development.

The history and shape of the landscape is however a fundamental interest as we seek to meet the challenges of maintaining a viable agricultural and rural economy with environmental concerns.

Life away from the office still involves horses and other means of transport including cycling.
