Members of our Pulborough Team recently attended the South Downs National Park Farmer’s Breakfast, to catch up with clients and hear some updates from the South Downs National Park Authority.

Here is a brief round-up of interesting updates that you might be interested in:

Changes to SDNP Planning Policy

The main policy change affecting farmers is the change to Policy SD32: Rural Workers Dwellings. Previously, this had been an Agriculture and Forestry Workers Dwelling policy but will now include all rural workers providing that functional and financial tests are met. Part of this includes demonstrating an essential need relating to the landed holding.

There will also be the introduction of a new policy, covering Viticulture, Winemaking, and Wine Tourism that aims to reflect the increasing importance of the sector within the National Park. It will aim to encourage opportunities around wine making and tourism in the protected landscape.

Further to these policy changes, there is a proposal to reform the SDNP pre-application process. This will include a desktop appraisal based on policy and development principles, followed by a second detailed assessment if stage one is successful.

Trees for the Downs Fund

It is no secret that Ash Dieback and other diseases continue to leave enormous holes in our woodlands, and we are frequently asked whether there is funding available to facilitate restocking. The South Downs National Park Trust can support those within the SDNP by supplying trees and the associated protections in an effort to restore woodlands.

An expression of interest form must be submitted before 31 March 2025 to be considered for the fund.

The Trust is also operating other schemes including a Beeline Fund and is due to release a ‘Pounds for Ponds’ Fund in 2025.
