Natural Capital Opportunities
Unlocking the Potential of Natural Capital
Natural Capital encompasses the world’s natural resources and ecosystems, including air, water, soil, and living organisms. These elements provide essential goods and services that support human life and economic activity, making effective management crucial for sustaining these benefits.
Although Natural Capital is a relatively new concept in agriculture and land ownership, it has become a significant player alongside stewardship and other subsidies. Leveraging Natural Capital opportunities allows landowners to diversify without the need for complex planning. Early adopters stand to benefit the most from these emerging markets, but professional guidance is essential. Accessing private nature-based markets can offer long-term income while addressing climate change and biodiversity loss both locally and regionally.
Opportunities can be location dependent, with schemes like water and nutrient neutrality requiring specific catchments and authorities for implementation.
The Batcheller Monkhouse Environment Gateway supports clients in maximizing the potential of Natural Capital. The five main Natural Capital opportunities are:
- Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
- Carbon Auditing
- Environmental
- Social and Governance (ESG) Units
- Nutrient Neutrality
- Water Neutrality
The Environment Gateway team is excited to announce the launch of several habitat banks, providing substantial BNG units to Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) and Nature Conservation Areas (NCAs) across the South East.
